Kuta is probably the area that most people think of when thinking about Bali. Kuta is where tourism began in Bali, starting out as a transit point of those seeking enlightenment in India. That was back in the 60's. Then the Australian surfies based themselves here to surf the Bali breaks and from that time until now, Kuta has become the ever developing, ever changing and improving tourist capital of Bali and Indonesia.
Recently, Kuta has been getting a trendy edge to it. Many of the restaurants have gourmet menus, the shops are becoming more exclusive but you're still going to find some great bargains, some absolutely divine cuisine from around the world and some great open air bars.
Kuta's the place to go for an endless stream of restaurants, entertainment, hotels and of course, the famous Kuta Beach which spans from the airport for miles, heading north along the Bali Strait.
There's a real atmosphere in Kuta. The place is always on the go and it's easy to see why so many people go back year after year. Basically, it's got everything you want - the great choice of hotels, the shopping experience, the beach and the non-stop buzz and excitement.
At Kuta Beach, you'll always see surfers kicking about on their boards in the waves and the odd one catching a goodie, there'll be the Balinese merchants renting surfboards, selling fresh pineapple and cold drinks, the old massage ladies and a good few sunbathers from around the globe. The beach disappears into the mist at either end and is a lovely place to walk in the early morning hours.
Over the years, Kuta has grown to absorb the villages surrounding it, more notably Legian to the north and South Kuta, or Tuban to the south.
